What are Mudras and how can they
help create energy in the body?
A mudra is a symbolic or ritual
pose which originates from the Indian Vedic culture and in sanskrit means
gesture, some mudras involve the whole body but most are performed by bringing
the hand and fingers together to form a specific pattern which when occurs can
release energy within the body.
So how do mudras work? Our body is an incredibly intricate communication device, if the brain needs to
communicate a message for us to take action it will do so by transmitting nerve
impulses which then allow neurones to communicate with each other, information
to be processed and the relevant action taken. Our hands carry motor and
sensory mechanisms and by performing mudras we are able to send messages back
to the brain allowing the body to open up the relevant energy centres including
the chakras and allow energy to flow at an optimal level.
Mudras are most commonly
performed during yoga or meditation sitting cross legged, but they can be done anywhere
by sitting, lying or even moving so long as you remain focused throughout the
time they are being performed whilst ensuring your body maintains physical symmetry
and balance. Some mudras can be challenging as we all have different degrees of
flexibility in the hands and fingers. For this reason everyone will experience
their effectiveness differently and if at any time whilst performing a mudra
you start to feel unwell you should stop immediately as that particular mudra
may not be suited to your body or energetic system.
Hand mudras can be held for between
1-5 minutes on average to be most effective and it is recommended to practice
just one mudra at a time either with one hand or both hands so that you do not
send multiple messages to the brain which can cause confusion as to the action
to be taken, as by performing a mudra we are sending a message from our
conscious self to our energetic self so that it can relay the message and take
appropriate action.
Each mudra is performed for a
different reason but collectively it is always to encourage a sense of internal
peace balance, connection and healing within the body. Our entire body is made
from energy and the fingers represent the different elements along with the
chakras so what does each digit represent and what are the five elements?
The five elements which make up
our bodies are comprised of earth which is our physical self, water our liquid
part making up 60%, fire our body heat, wind which is our breath and space
which is our thoughts or consciousness. Just like the chakras if just one of
these elements becomes unbalanced we can start to feel depressed and unaligned
and in some cases illness may develop. The corresponding digit on our hands
making up the elements collectively are as follows:
The thumb is connected to the fire element and
solar plexus
The first finger the wind element and the
heart chakra.
The middle finger to the space
element or consciousness and the throat chakra
The ring finger to the earth and
the root chakra
The little finger to water and the sacral chakra.
Performing mudras on a daily
basis can not only help to realign and open up the energy centres but can also
help build up immunity within the body from illness or emotional distress, they
help us to see and focus on what it is we want in our lives and by bringing our
hands together to form these movements we sub consciously are encouraging our
desires into becoming our reality.
