What are the advantages and disadvantages of working with base oils?

Natural oils which are derived from seeds, nuts and plants have been used for many years not just for massage but for their therapeutic benefits.
Advantages
The oils provide a gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and brighten the appearance of the skin making it appear more radiant (try Grapeseed and Apricot Kernel)
The oils provide a carrier for essential oils to be absorbed for therapeutic benefits including soothing and helping to reduce inflammation and irritation (try lavender, chamomile and rose essential oils blended in )
The oils can help to increase the circulation when blended with specific essential oils increasing the flow of oxygen to the skin and improving all aspects of health and radiance (try blending peppermint oil with coconut)
The oils are deeply moisturising, penetrating deeply into the skin, making it soft and supple and reducing fine lines and wrinkles (try coconut,Argen or Jojoba oil - I personally use Grapeseed which also works well)
The oils can provide an anti aging effect when combined with essential oils as they contain antioxidants to destroy free radicals. (try Ylang Ylang,Clary Sage and Rosemary)
So long as the receiver does not have sensitive skin or suffer from allergies any of the oils will be suitable depending on preference. For dry skin it is advised that you use an oil with a high fatty content such as coconut. For extra relaxation add lavender to the blend.
Disadvantages
The oils can be messy to use, smell and create stickiness. They can also stain laundry and are slippery on the floor if spilt. They can leave a greasy residue and can be difficult to clean from surfaces. Some can irritate and cause reactions on sensitive skin, particularly if they contain artificial fragrances or ingredients.
