What are the most common causes of low self esteem?
There are numerous reasons that a person may be struggling with self esteem issues and it is often due to encountering one of the issues below. As a result we give up our power and forget our worth which leaves us vulnerable for others to take advantage of, control or manipulate which only lowers our self esteem even further.
Constantly comparing themselves to the stereotypes portrayed on social media and feeling not good enough .
Having a mental or physical health care concern.
Bullying at school, in the work place or trolling on social media
Feeling judged and experiencing criticism from teachers or those in authority.
Emotionally distant or unavailable parents or caregivers.
Parents who were in constant conflict throughout childhood
Physically, emotionally or mentally abusive relationships .
Trauma in childhood including sexual abuse .
Constantly being compared to others and feeling ridiculed.
Being turned down for promotions at work on a regular basis
Cultural belief systems that make you feel guilty or shameful for wanting to take another path in life .
Social pressures and expectations .
What are the negative aspects resulting from a lack of self care?
Mental health issues including Anxiety and Depression .
A decrease in immunity as a result of Stress leading to illness and other diseases or health concerns.
Difficulty with communicating with loved ones or forming relationships due to a lack of confidence or feeling that you are not good enough .
Losing sense of who you are or what your wants and needs are as you have been so focussed on putting others first leading to possible burnout or at best a deep sense of unhappiness and dissatisfaction with your life.
Social withdrawal from loved ones, friends and family .
Difficulty setting boundaries in professional and personal relationships .
Insomnia or restlessness due to a reduced cognitive function.
Feeling constantly exhausted and overwhelmed resulting in a lack of motivation and productivity particularly at work.
Unstable moods (not hormone related) meaning emotions change constantly from feeling really high to low causing confusion within not only yourself but the potential to cause problems within your relationships also.
An overwhelming fear that you are unable to cope or see a way forward in life which can lead to serious addictions including alcohol, drugs, smoking or tragically more serious long term consequences .
