What is a base oil/ carrier oil ?

Oil is the most popular choice as a massage medium, it can be used on its own or essential oils can be added for extra therapeutic benefits (which we will cover later), for this reason it is known as a base or carrier oil because it acts as a 'carrier' helping to allow the essential oils to be absorbed into the body .
Base and Carrier oils can be effectively used on their own also and are particularly recommended when it comes to either Pregnancy massage or for receivers with sensitive skin , when practicing safely it is essential to avoid allergies and a reaction leading to irritation and discomfort or possibly worse if allergies are present. This is when extra care needs to be taken.
If you wish to use essential oils in the blend then ideally you should seek the advice of an aromatherapist who is trained in the different properties and benefits the oils can bring , but another option is to buy ready made premixed oils which have already been blended with other oils that are compatible and safe to use.
The most popular and recommended base oils that you can either use by themselves or add essential oils to are Argan, Jojoba, Apricot Kernel, Coconut, Almond,Avocado and Grapeseed oil.
