What is a highly sensitive person and how can you recognise someone who is one?

Highly sensitive people or hsps for short make up 15 percent of the population, they have similar characteristics to Empaths and if some are a combination of both (myself included) the qualities they share will only be intensified.

As I have learnt from previous experience HSPs need to choose their friendships, work environments and personal relationships very carefully due to their highly sensitive nature which is their strength but also their weakness as they can get easily wounded by hurtful or insensitive words and other actions that other people may not be affected by . Therefore, it is very important that they choose environments and relationships where others can understand their highly emotional nature and make them feel not only loved but understood.

So how can you easily recognize a hsp?

Due to their delicate nervous systems they are not only incredibly sensitive but also startle easily with sudden noises or movements . They greatly dislike a lot of noise especially if it is constant and crave quiet and peaceful environments .

They react quickly to stimulants including caffeine or alcohol
They do not excel in work environments with large groups or under pressure. They are much more comfortable in small groups or 1 to 1. This is true socially also.
They are very sensitive to other peoples emotions and needs sensing changes in energy very quickly
They can often feel misunderstood by family or peers and do not like confrontation and will avoid it unless completely unavoidable .
They are perfectionists in everything they do and are deeply conscious ,feeling that everything must be done properly
They do not like violence of any kind and if they witness it in any form can take years to fully recover. Watching a horror film will ensure they will not sleep that night!
They are deeply moved by music and art and enjoy spending time with people of equal depth as they easily see through superficial behaviour
They do not like change, preferring to have a routine which helps them to feel safe and connected.
They are often drawn to nature to rest and recharge
