Why is it important to position the body correctly during a pregnancy massage?
However this has been proven to not be ideal due to excessive pressure being experienced around the stomach area and an increase in blood pressure leading to dizziness and a possible danger to the feutus , therefore the only safe option is to lay on the side in what may be recognised as being in the 'recovery position' with the knees bent.
This position is very stabilizing for mum to be and baby and therefore creates mental, physical and emotional benefits including allowing the lower back to be in a more relaxed position , this allows the hips to release whilst lengthening the spine, allowing back pain to be naturally alleviated. Sinus pressure is also reduced in addition to pressure on the breasts which are very sensitive during this time .
This is also a very safe position allowing mum to be but also the therapist to feel safe in the knowledge that you can fully relax and enjoy the benefits of the treatment . It is generally more beneficial to lay mainly or at least start the pregnancy massage laying on your left side , this is because this will help to increase the blood flow from the heart and therefore allow more oxygen and nutrients to reach the placenta and your baby .
Laying on the back can carry risks, as in the final two trimesters the increased weight of the abdomen can compress blood flow to the heart ,therefore affecting the feutus, reducing the ability for breathing comfortably and cause problems with the digestive system.
