How can Holistic Therapy help to improve self esteem?

How can Holistic Therapy help to improve self esteem?

The meaning of Holistic Therapy is to explore all aspects of a person's lifestyle to determine the root causes of any concerns including mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and sexual health so how can this help timprove self esteem?

Through self exploration on a deeper level, Holistic Therapy can help to determine a greater understanding of your strengths in addition to learning ways to help you to manage and improve your weaknesses, which leads to an increase in self confidence as you learn to develop healthy coping mechanisms which in the long-term lead to improved health and wellbeing .

Holistic Therapy focuses on the ' bigger picture' to achieve long term goals as opposed to temporary short term fixes, combining the individual therapies with self care and necessary life style changes. In total there are 8 pillars of Holistic Therapy which focus on Spiritual, Financial, Emotional, Environmental, Nutritional, Physical , Intellectual and Social health and all are equally important for different reasons.

The decisions we make in life will have a huge impact on our happiness and sense of fulfilment and aspects of Holistic Therapy including counselling provides a non judgemental way for us to understand ourselves better, leading to an increased sense of confidence with the choices we make, so we are able to feel stronger and more empowered.

If we suffer from low self esteem we are naturally very self critical and through Holistic Therapy and exploring every aspect of our health we are able to learn techniques to raise our consciousness and awareness, which can help us to stop judging ourselves so harshly and understanding that as human beings we all make mistakes. This results in a greater appreciation of our selves in addition to an increased sense of self love and compassion .

I will share with you the 5 best forms of Holistic Therapy in my opinion that can help to increase self love and these are , Talking therapies(including Counselling ,Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Competitive Memory Training , Compassion Focused Therapy)
Body Work Therapies
Yoga
Meditation
Pranayama

How can talking therapies help with self esteem?

There are many different forms of talking therapies that can help to improve self esteem and these include counselling,
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Competitive Memory Training and Compassion Focused Therapy. All these therapies in particular help to explore and identify unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving before finding a solution allowing us to increase our sense of understanding in regard to our concerns so leading to restoring all aspects of our health and wellbeing .

Talking therapies can have a significant effect on raising self esteem by providing a safe and confidential space where unhelpful beliefs which lead to negative patterns and behaviours can be fully explored. Through learning to understand our thoughts, feelings and emotions more readily we can develop the confidence to explore our past experiences so we can not only identify negative patterns that may be harmful to us , but also develop coping strategies to help us to move forward.

Through actively discussing our problems and concerns we are encouraged to build assertiveness in addition to improving our communication skills, so we learn to become more self aware and practice self compassion within ourselves.

Sometimes it can be easier to talk to a trained professional instead of a loved one, because not only are they anonymous and confidential , but they can offer the appropriate support, to see situations from an unbiased perspective, therefore eliminating the potential concern of experiencing judgement or criticism from a loved one ,which could lead to damaging the relationship.

In addition to this, when we speak to a stranger we are less concerned with how we are perceived to be, allowing us to be able to feel more comfortable being open and vulnerable, whilst reducing the pressure to conform to another person's standards or expectations.

How can body work therapies help with self esteem?

Body work therapies help to enhance self esteem using touch to help you to become more present and connected with your physical body. In addition to improving physical wellbeing our sense of consciousness and awareness increases , whilst physical tension and mental stress are released, leading to improved comfort, which naturally encourages an increased sense of self acceptance within ourselves.

As discomfort is released cortisol levels are lowered, reducing Stress which then encourages a more balanced mental and emotional state of mind helping to improve mood which in turn helps us to become more appreciative of our Physical bodies. As our sense of wellbeing increases, so does our perception of ourselves, which expands our sense of confidence, so we can feel more positive about inevitable life changes, as we become more resilient to difficult and challenging situations and more open to the possibilities of change which can offer new opportunities for the future.

Cuddle Therapy, Hawaiian Massage and Reiki are all body therapies that are beneficial, however in my experience there is nothing more powerful then Tantra, as through it's practice you are encouraged to become completely conscious and accepting of every aspect of yourself, which leads to a sense of inner harmony in addition to personal empowerment .

Through learning to form and nurture a spiritual connection within ,we are able to discover our strengths whilst accepting our weaknesses to help us realise we are all worthy of love and nobody is more deserving to receive it then ourselves. .

How can practising yoga help to improve self esteem?

The benefits of practising yoga on a regular and long term basis are vast but how can it specifically help with self esteem?

When we are lacking in self love we are lacking in internal connection within ourselves , practising yoga increases our sense of self awareness and consciousness, allowing us to become more mindful not only of the world around us but also of the connection we share with our mind and body.

Through becoming more connected and stronger both internally and externally we are able to adopt a greater sense of self acceptance and respect for our bodies ,which not only increases our self confidence, but also promotes a positive body image which may not have been present previously.

Yoga connects every aspect of our beings, enhancing our mind and body connection which helps to regulate our emotions and stabilise our mood, as we are able to become more grounded due to practising breathing techniques , being in stillness and learning new asanas, which not only help to increase strength and flexibility but also enable us to feel more grounded and focussed within.

In addition to this, practising yoga with others can be especially beneficial as mutual support can not only empower you to stay focussed , but the emotional connections can provide support and reassurance to help you achieve your goals in an environment which helps us to realise that we are all beautiful in our own way and what makes us shine is not the physical perfection of our bodies ,but the sense of internal love and respect we feel internally for ourselves which we are then able to reflect outwardly to others.

How can meditation help with improving self esteem?

Meditation is a very powerful tool to help increase our sense of self love because through learning to quieten the mind we naturally become more self aware which then enables us to be able to observe and then process our thoughts and emotions much more easily.

As human beings we all make rash decisions which we can regret and we all have done this at some point in time. If through meditation we can learn to slow down our thought process without judgement then we can retrain our mind to process positive thoughts instead of negative thoughts which are only destructive.

Through learning new thought patterns and using positive affirmations we can replace critical ways of speaking to ourselves with love and acceptance increasing our confidence in addition to our sense of internal connection and self validation.

In addition to this , practising meditation offers so many other benefits including improved sleep and a reduction in Stress and Anxiety leading to enhancing our emotional state of mind . Through learning to still and quieten the mind we are able to feel more connected and a sense of internal peace increasing our self compassion and sense of love we feel within ourselves.

There are many forms of meditation which are very beneficial, if you are starting for the first time try a guided meditation whilst you learn how to quieten the mind.

How can Pranayama help to improve self esteem?

Pranayama is a practice that derives from yoga which focuses on various breathing techniques to regulate the body and promote wellbeing in all aspects so how can this help with self esteem specifically?

Pranayama has many similarities to meditation as it helps to refocus the mind to more positive thought processes, helping to reduce Stress and Anxiety through its practice. Through learning to centre and stabilise our thoughts and emotions we can learn ways in which we can understand ourselves better increasing our sense of self compassion and love whilst releasing doubt , self criticism and other negative emotions that only serve to lower our vibration.

There are two breathing techniques which are specifically beneficial.

Brahmari otherwise known as humming bee breath is very beneficial for reducing Anxiety whilst increasing awareness, whilst Kapalabhati, otherwise known as cleansing breath helps to release trapped emotions and negative thoughts processes leading to reinvigoration and rejuvenation of the mind, body and spirit.
