What do the colours of the lower chakras represent and how can they encourage wellbeing in the body? Hi everyone, The psychology of colour is fascinating as is understanding the effects that different colours have on our health and wellbeing, every colour has its own vibrational energy and this is particularly relevant when it comes to the chakras, which control our energy flow and chi. So with this in mind what are the individual colours of each chakra and what do the colours symbolise in regards to improving health and wellbeing? The first chakra is the root or Muladhara and is located at the base of the spine and its associated colours are red and black. Red is the colour of passion and stimulates the flow of energy, it is eye catching and vibrant, and increases the flow of adrenalin throughout the body. Red is beneficial for enhancing sexual desire and confidence but health wise can aid with IBS, low blood pressure, muscular discomfort, anaemia and respiratory conditions. It is best avoided however for those who are prone to anger, stress or are dieting as it enhances the appetite in all respects! Black is a colour that absorbs all the others as it contains no light , people often associate this colour with mourning but it can also be incredibly sophisticated and easy to wear as it goes with all clothing and is incredibly slimming. Black although very grounding and calming can actually encourage feelings of sadness leading to depression so it is best avoided if you are not feeling positive and also on a hot day due to its properties of absorbing heat. The second chakra is the sacral or Svadhisthana and is located just below the navel, above the root chakra. The colour associated with this energy centre is orange which is bright and warm and associated with joy and feeling happy, it is energising and boosts immunity and sexuality, orange is the colour of fun and creativity, and it helps to stimulate the thyroid and aid metabolism, however you may wish to avoid orange if you are feeling nauseous, restless have high blood pressure or an addictive personality. The third chakra is the solar plexus or Manipura and is located just above the navel and the sacral chakra. Yellow is the associated colour and this bright and sunny colour is guaranteed to brighten up the way we feel and energise the body. It is a vibrant and cheerful colour that evokes happiness and is very detoxing for the body and mind and is therefore ideal for digestive issues, concentration, Anxiety, depression and bladder issues. You may wish to avoid it however if you have a heart condition, Insomnia, neuralgia, fever or ADHD. The fourth chakra is the heart or Anahata located just over the thymus and above the solar plexus chakra. This chakra has two colours associated with it green which represents showing love to others and pink which is giving love to yourself. Green is the colour which is most regarded for its healing properties, it is deeply tranquil and yet symbolises growth and new opportunities, it is particularly recommended for those with lung or heart conditions and too help improve the circulatory system. Pink is the colour associated with romance and femininity, it is incredibly restorative and so ideal for those with anger or self-esteem issues. Pink although derived from red is much more soothing and is actually used in hospitals and prisons to help reduce behavioural problems.
