How do you learn to meditate?

  As a beginner meditation can take time so be patient with yourself . Finding a comfortable position and learning to be in stillness whilst quieting the mind is not easy. Begin by finding a quiet and warm space , you can either sit on a chair with your feet on the floor, sit cross legged on the floor or lay down facing upwards, with your body laid flat, however you are most comfortable . When you are ready close the eyes and start by slowly inhaling through the nose and then out through the mouth. Let any thoughts come and go , allow them to pass with no judgement. Now focus into the breath and allow your mind to clear . When you are starting out just try to do 5 minutes and then you can gradually increase this time when you feel ready. The optimum is 20 minutes ideally twice a day , when you wake up to bring focus to your day and at night to help you relax and switch off before sleep. For beginners a guided meditation is always the most beneficial until you become familiar with different techniques then you can choose the style which resonates most with you. Transcendental meditation involves the repeating of a specific mantra to achieve a deeper sense of relaxation and connection. Loving kindness meditation focusses on forgiveness and giving unconditional love and acceptance to others as well as yourself. Focussed meditation is as the name suggests focussed on one part of the body at a time or a specific point or object to increase awareness and perception.   Meditation is an ancient practice that has actually been around for thousands of years and provides us with a way to not only regulate our emotions, but also to become more aware and conscious of our surroundings and connections , both with ourselves and others. There are many different types of meditation and it is important to choose the type that resonates the best with you, as practising can prove challenging at first because the art of just being quiet and quieting our thoughts can be difficult , but with regular practice it does get easier and the benefits that can be gained are certainly worth the effort .
