What is Meditation?
Meditation is an ancient practice that has actually been around for thousands of years and provides us with a way to not only regulate our emotions, but also to become more aware and conscious of our surroundings and connections , both with ourselves and others.
There are many different types of meditation and it is important to choose the type that resonates the best with you, as practising can prove challenging at first because the art of just being quiet and quieting our thoughts can be difficult , but with regular practice it does get easier and the benefits that can be gained are certainly worth the effort .
Meditation uses a variety of mental and physical techniques including breath work, sounds, words, phrases, mantras, images or music to help to clear the mind and enables us to think more clearly , improving clarity and concentration. It allows us to observe our thoughts in a non judgemental way and if we have a concern it can help to provide more insight so we can find an appropriate solution.
Often the most common difficulty for beginners is learning to sit in stillness without becoming over whelmed or feeling you need to do anything at all, learning to calm the 'monkey mind' (as it is commonly known due to a natural tendency to get distracted easily) is worth the effort for the peace of mind that it can bring in both the short and long-term, improving our overall health and quality of life.
