What is the history of Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head massage has always played an important role in Indian culture, featuring in the earliest Ayurvedic texts from over 4,000 years ago. It was originally used by women as part of their personal grooming and a way for infants from the time of their birth to three years old to bond with their mothers whilst helping them develop healthy immune systems.
When the children got older the massage continued until the age of 6 which is when they were taught the techniques to share with other family members.
Before it became recognised as a treatment it has been used in hairdressers and barbers and is still used today, coming from the hindu words 'Champi' which means to have your head massaged.
It first came to the West in the 1970s when a man named Narendra Mehta was training to be a massage therapist and wanted to learn techniques for massaging the scalp, he discovered various techniques which he then implemented to combine with the neck, shoulders and upper back . His techniques proved to be very successful and hence Indian Head Massage started to become recognised as an effective way to maintain health and wellbeing.
