What is EFT and what are the benefits of practising it?

EFT otherwise known as the Emotional Freedom Technique was developed in the 1990's from a process known as TFT or Thought Field Therapy and is a rapid and highly effective technique which incorporates the use of tapping on specific meridian end points to restore emotional harmony and balance within the mind and body.
How does tapping work and why is EFT so effective? Originally it was thought that the mind and body were comprised of two individual states which were not connected, however it has been scientifically proven that this is not correct simply by the fact that when we feel any form of emotion we are not just made aware of it in our mind but we physically feel it in our body also. A simple example… Can you remember the first time you fell in love or even just had a crush that gorgeous rush of excitement and the butterfly’s in your stomach? That wasn’t just felt in your mind was it? …You felt it in your body too, therefore emotions are felt in both mind and body.
When we feel certain emotions in our minds chemicals are released from the brain into the body which flood the cells causing them to chemically change to reflect the emotion that has been transmitted to the outer receptor layer. As our moods change so do the cells in the body changing formation constantly as energy patterns evolve which is why when we are feeling sad our bodies may feel heavy and lethargic yet if we are feeling happy and optimistic our bodies can then start to feel light and tingling, isn’t it incredible how our bodies work? What is even more amazing is that it is possible to change how you are feeling simply through tapping on key meridian points which when stimulated help to change thought patterns, therefore changing your mood, emotions and complete state of mind.
The meridians are a complex system of energy pathways which deliver essential chi to the organs including the Nervous, Circulatory, Respiratory, Immune, Skeletal, Muscular and Digestive systems. Sometimes imbalances or blockages can appear along these pathways which if left untreated can cause multiple emotional and physical disturbances in the body. A well-known alternative therapy is acupuncture which uses fine needles to stimulate the meridian points and release the blockages, allowing fresh chi and energy to flow through the energy channels. EFT uses the same principle but in a non-evasive way, instead of inserting needles into the relevant points tapping is used which not only provides instant relief but has long lasting benefits from conditions including Anxiety, Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder Phobias and can even aid weight loss. It can also be used to help provide motivation for example for a job promotion or focus for an upcoming exam there are many ways to use EFT all of which are highly beneficial and equally effective.
How is EFT performed? First of all the core issue which is causing disharmony is made present which is then evaluated as to the severity of discomfort felt in the mind and body. An appropriate sentence is then constructed to enable the mind and body to become fully aware of the issues felt. For example if Anxiety was the core issue a corresponding statement may be ‘Even though I am feeling Anxious, I deeply love and accept myself’. This statement is then expressed 3 times whilst tapping on a specific part of the body with the dominant hand, most commonly using the first two fingers to tap the relevant meridian point.
The points tapped during EFT are focused on the face and upper body with a point on the top of the head stimulating the majority of the meridian pathways. Each point is very specific and relates to a particular organ within the human body, during the tapping process changes are produced in the bodies thought field by first of all disrupting the initial energy fields but then through activation of the relevant points and acknowledgement statements, using specific phrasing followed by positive affirmations, change can be created at the deepest level leading to reduced Stress, Anxiety and fear.
It is recommended for maximum benefits to perform EFT daily, ideally before going to sleep to release any negative emotions which may have occurred throughout the day. EFT takes no effort to perform and is easy to learn with benefits felt after just one session. The whole premise behind EFT and hence the name is the realisation that when emotional issues are acknowledged and allowed to heal, transformation can then occur allowing the recipient to discover not only optimal health and happiness but a new found sense of freedom in mind and body.
