How the colours we associate ourselves with can affect every aspect of our wellbeing

The world we live in is alight with colour but were you aware of the effects different colours could have on your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing?  The use of colour therapy can helps us to understand the positives and benefits of the use of colour within our lives. So what are some of the ways we can use colour for effect?

The most obvious is through the clothes we wear, how often do you give a lot of thought as to the outfit you choose on a daily basis and yet subconsciously depending on our moods we will be drawn to wear certain colours to reflect how we are feeling, this of course will also depend on the accessories we choose, another example is when decorating your home do you think about how the colours you choose will make your home feel either warm and cosy or cold?  Many women dye their hair depending on how they feel within themselves or if they have had sudden life changes because they want to feel different an example is blond because as the saying goes ‘blonds have more fun’ and yellow is viewed as a cheerful colour.

There are many other ways that we can use colour to bring a new energy into a space or promote healing and these include wearing jewellery or scarves, adding flowers or candles to your home, putting the relevant coloured crystals into your shower head, breathing in that colour to help heal the body, looking at a coloured light, consuming food and drink in that colour, or simply mediating with that colour in mind or saying the name many times over.

Each colour vibrates at a different level and energy and a colour that is not primary will contain the characteristics of all the colours contained within it. Therefore it is so important to fully understand the concept of colour as for some conditions it can be very healing but for others it can make the problem much worse. Everywhere you look colour is being used but look a little closer and you will start to see similarities you may not have noticed before as colour can not only change the way you feel and affect medical conditions but it can also change atmospheres and behaviour.

For example a lot of therapy of health care business’ use green this is no coincidence as the characteristics of green are calming and nurturing, many food outlets use red as it stimulates appetite or did you know that orange is often used in marketing as buttons to click on as it stimulates happiness and fun?

So what are the negative and positive characteristics of using each colour?

White: contains all the colours of the spectrum combined and hence can amplify the effects of the other colours

White is a colour associated with purity and cleanliness it helps to balance the body internally, calms Anxiety, and helps with fevers, infections and liver disorders. The disadvantages of white are it can make you feel inhibited and can cause lethargy and is difficult to clean!

 Black: This colour contains no light and as a result it absorbs all other colours hence it is not recommended to wear on hot days. It is the colour of grounding and is calming. People often wear black at funerals or when they do not want to command attention to themselves, it is a slimming colour that can help aid addictive behaviours.The disadvantages of black are it keeps you in a comfort zone, can feel heavy and can lead to feelings of sadness leading to depression.

 Red: The colour red signifies energy and it commands attention! It is stimulating and is the colour of the base chakra so beneficial to use with any problems relating to the legs or feet. It is excellent for stimulating confidence and helps others to look and feel more attractive as it is a natural aphrodisiac! It is beneficial for IBS and can help treat anaemia, low blood pressure, muscular discomfort and respiratory conditions. The disadvantages of red are it stimulates appetite so avoid if dieting, avoid also if you have high blood pressure, insomnia, heart conditions or if you feel angry or stressed.

 Pink: The colour of the other side of the heart chakra signifying self-love and is associated with femininity and romance. It helps to reduce aggression and can ease insomnia, if you have problems in your personal relationships wear pink and it can help ease them as it calms anger. The disadvantages of pink are it can be viewed as too girly, and can lack seriousness.

 Green: The colour of calm and nurturing mentally and physically the colour of nature, it is linked to the heart chakra signifying giving of love and stabilises emotions and is a balancing colour due to it being at the middle of the light spectrum.  It is helpful for back problems, colds, hay fever and insomnia. It is also beneficial for heart conditions, Asthma, lowering blood pressure, stimulating the pituitary gland and is even an aphrodisiac! The disadvantages of green are too much can cause jealousy or fatigue due to its natural sedative properties.

 Blue: The colour blue is incredibly calming and hence promotes feelings of relaxation think of a beach on holiday with the water and clear blue sunny sky and rational thinking, it is the colour of the throat chakra so good for communicating and throat problems, it soothes inflammation, relieves headaches and can help with heart issues. Burns, ulcers, epilepsy, shock, menstrual cramps, colic and teeth issues can be aided by using blue.  The disadvantages of blue are it can seem cold so avoid if you have flu symptoms or feel depressed or have rheumatism.

 Purple: The colour purple resonates to the crown chakra signalling spirituality and is the colour priests wear, it is also linked to royalty and hence gains respect. It lowers blood pressure is hypnotic and can even help to heal broken bones! The disadvantages of purple are too much can inflate anger, cause fatigue low blood pressure or cause veins to get worse if there is a problem associated with them.

 Yellow: The colour of cheerfulness and linking to the solar plexus chakra, yellow is helpful for all digestive issues. It is also beneficial for self-worth, concentration, depression, bladder issues, the nervous system and the skin. The disadvantages of wearing yellow are it can negatively affect neuralgia, diarrhoea, heart conditions, fever and ADHD.

Orange: Orange is the colour of the sacral signifying fun and creativity! It is energising and boosts sexuality and immunity. It is stimulating for the thyroid and helps aid metabolism. The disadvantages of orange are it can increase restlessness, appetite and feelings of being nauseous. It can make blood pressure increase as well as addictions and arrogance.

Brown: This is the colour of calm and stability, an earthy colour it encourages a feeling of being grounded and is beneficial to use with shock, confusion, over excitement as it is calming. The disadvantages of too much brown are it can cause depression, can give the impression of being old fashioned or boring and can cause people to avoid trying new things.

 It really is remarkable the effect that colour has on your life, why not test the theory for yourself and step out of your comfort zone with a new colour ,you never know it could have more benefits then you ever thought were possible and isn’t that what everyone would like?
